Commercial & Industrial End Users

Threatened by both the potential of energy price increases and the risk of energy reliability, large power consumers can often make a sound business case for taking a more independent posture when it comes to energy. Some invest in on-site generation resources, some opt for large uninterruptible power source (UPS) systems to guard against the loss of power during a blackout, while others choose to detach from the grid all together. The largest consumers and those with mission critical needs are focusing more attention and resources on energy storage options, such as the DPR®, as both economic and environmental pressures grow.
How do you know when it is the right time to consider a DPR? Customers can expect a short payback period when they face a combination of the following:
- Typical loads are upwards of 1 MW
- On-peak time of use rates are > 25 cents/kWh higher than off-peak prices
- High demand charges
- Grid reliability is crucial for business success (examples include data centers, hospitals, military bases, airports, business districts, etc.)
The three main services for Commercial and Industrial End-Users are:
Peak Shaving/Load Leveling
A DPR can absorb and provide power, charging during off-peak times for use during on-peak times. This ultimately reduces energy costs by both lowering demand charges and taking advantage of favorable time-of-use rates. While the grid sees a much more ideal and level load, the customer does not need to change consumption patterns to decrease its overall electric bill.
Frequency Response (Primary Control)
Like generator droop response and turbine-generator rotating inertia, the DPR can actively correct frequency deviations automatically in real-time with power injections and withdraws following major electrical disturbances, as well as address less severe frequency deviations due to normal grid operations throughout the course of each day.
Emergency Back-Up
The DPR can act as a back-up power reserve by providing power when the grid experiences black-outs. The blinkless transfer from grid power to back-up power ensures reliability and improved power quality for critical loads.
